Yahaya Bello’s Trial and the Question of Political Accountability
Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello is facing EFCC cases involving allegations of money laundering, criminal breach of trust and financial misconduct worth tens of billions of naira. He has pleaded not guilty, and the cases remain before the courts. In June 2026, an Abuja court dismissed an attempt to stop one of the trials and ordered proceedings to continue. The legal process must be allowed to run its course, as allegations are not the same as a conviction. Still, the issue goes beyond one politician. When powerful figures remain politically influential while serious cases are unresolved, citizens may question whether accountability applies equally to everyone. Nigerians must decide what standards they expect from public office holders. Beyond criminal convictions, transparency, public trust and a willingness to answer difficult questions should matter in a democracy.
