Babachir Lawal Says Obi and Kwankwaso Feared Atiku’s Influence in ADC

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal says Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso were initially wary of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s influence in the African Democratic Congress before joining the party. Speaking on television, Lawal said he helped persuade both politicians to enter the ADC. He claimed Obi was reluctant at first, while Kwankwaso feared Atiku’s presence could limit the party’s prospects. Lawal said both men later became concerned that the party’s presidential primary was tilted in Atiku’s favour. He added that disagreement over a consensus candidate contributed to their exit from the ADC and their alignment with the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of 2027.
