African Migrant Farmworkers Help Feed Europe Despite Harsh Conditions
I watched a CNN documentary about a Ghanaian migrant living in Spain. He showed the reporter the makeshift settlement where he lives near the farms. According to him, the conditions are worse than many slums in Lagos. He said he works long hours planting and harvesting crops under scorching heat for very low pay. He left Ghana hoping to secure a better future for his children, but life in Europe has not been as easy as many people imagine. The report highlighted Europe’s dependence on migrant labour for farm work that many locals are unwilling to do. Spain has also recently granted legal status to some undocumented migrants. It raises a painful question: when will African countries offer enough opportunity for their citizens to thrive at home?
