2027 Elections: How INEC’s Party Membership Register Deadline Could Affect Candidates
INEC extended the deadline for political parties to submit their membership registers from April 21 to May 10, 2026. The commission later confirmed that all 22 registered parties submitted their registers by May 8 and that verification would follow. Under Section 77 of the Electoral Act, only people listed in the membership register submitted to INEC may vote or be voted for during party primaries, congresses and conventions. Parties are also prohibited from using a different register for those internal elections. This means an aspirant or candidate whose name was not included in the applicable register could face questions over the validity of their nomination. Any challenge would still depend on the facts of the case and the outcome of legal proceedings.
