FG Launches Digital Registry to Remove Unsafe Gas Cylinders From Nigerian Homes
The Federal Government has launched the National Cylinder Recirculation Programme to improve cooking-gas safety and phase out expired, damaged and uncertified cylinders. Led by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria alongside regulators and industry partners, the programme will register, inspect, test and digitally track cylinders throughout their lifespan. Cylinders that pass safety checks can remain in use, while failed cylinders will be repaired or withdrawn. Consumers will be able to exchange cylinders through approved retailers under a nationwide system being introduced in phases. The initiative is expected to improve access to safer cylinders, support clean cooking, create jobs and encourage more households to switch from firewood, charcoal and kerosene to LPG. The national unveiling is scheduled for October 28 and 29, 2026, in Abuja during the Nigeria Clean Cooking Forum.
