Nigeria Should Demand Fairer Visa Terms in Its Foreign Agreements
I believe Nigeria needs to review its foreign policy and bilateral agreements to better protect the interests of its citizens. Nigeria continues to sign major trade, mining and energy agreements with countries around the world. Yet many Nigerians still face strict visa requirements, high application fees, long queues and frequent rejections when trying to travel abroad. The treatment of Nigerian passport holders often feels unfair and degrading. Nigeria’s immigration laws allow for reciprocal measures based on how other countries treat Nigerian citizens. I think this principle should be applied more firmly. Agreements with countries such as South Africa, the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom should include clearer discussions on mobility, consular treatment and fair visa processes. Foreign policy should not only focus on investments and government-to-government deals. It should also make life easier and safer for ordinary Nigerians at home and abroad.
