Anambra Government Challenges Peter Obi Over Loans, Salary Arrears and Ecological Fund

The Anambra State Government has challenged Peter Obi to respond to allegations that his administration left behind undisclosed World Bank-linked loans, unpaid workers’ entitlements and other liabilities. In a statement, the government said eight IDA/World Bank loan agreements signed during Obi’s tenure totalled about $123.77 million. It claimed that $92.35 million remained outstanding as of June 2026 and is being repaid through deductions from the state’s federal allocations. The government also alleged that more than 700 workers of the Anambra State Water Corporation were owed salaries, pensions and gratuities. It said the state reached an out-of-court settlement in 2024 and has paid over ₦1.19 billion so far. It further questioned the whereabouts of an alleged ₦2.13 billion ecological fund, saying the bank account cited by Obi was an IGR account and did not show the stated balance. The claims are part of an ongoing public dispute over the finances and assets Obi handed over when he left office in 2014. Obi’s response to the allegations was not included in the statement.
