Tinubu and Atiku Now Agree on the Need for Cheaper Fuel and Transport
Atiku Abubakar’s pledge to restore petrol subsidy appears to have pushed President Bola Tinubu to place cheaper fuel and transport costs back at the centre of public debate. While Atiku favours subsidy restoration, Tinubu is proposing CNG expansion and lower transport fares through state intervention. I argue that this marks a major shift from the government’s earlier defence of subsidy removal as an unavoidable reform. Tinubu himself promised lower fuel prices during the 2023 campaign, yet petrol prices and the wider cost of living have risen sharply since subsidy removal. Nigeria’s dependence on road transport, petrol-powered generators and expensive private energy makes high fuel prices especially damaging. The gains in state revenues mean little to households whose salaries and purchasing power have been eroded by inflation. The real question is no longer whether Nigerians should endure hardship for reform. It is how government can make energy, transport, food and basic living costs affordable again.
