I Found 298 Pages of CMS Records Linked to the 1901–02 Aro Expedition
I found a catalogue reference to 298 pages of Church Missionary Society records from 1902 held by the Cadbury Research Library at the University of Birmingham. The papers can be accessed through institutions that subscribe to the CMS digital archive. Academic research on the 1901–02 Aro Expedition has examined links between missionary activity, intelligence gathering and British military operations in southern Nigeria. British forces attacked Arochukwu in December 1901, and colonial dispatches later reported the destruction of the Ibini Ukpabi shrine. I believe these records may also provide context for later colonial campaigns in places such as Afikpo and Ezza, including the 1905 removal of the Ezza wall pot. Students at EBSU, UNN and UI may be able to check their libraries for access to the CMS archive.
