Nigerian Among 11 Couriers Convicted Over £13.8m Cannabis Smuggling Plot in UK
Gideon Oluwasetemi Olumoyegun, 26, has pleaded guilty to his role in a plot to smuggle cannabis valued at £13.8 million into the United Kingdom through Birmingham Airport. Border Force officers arrested Olumoyegun and 10 other couriers in August 2024 after discovering 460 kilograms of cannabis concealed in 22 suitcases. The group had travelled from Thailand through Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. Prosecutors said each courier carried two suitcases containing about 20 kilograms of vacuum-packed cannabis, hidden beneath a thin layer of clothing. Eight of the bags also contained tracking devices. Olumoyegun is due to be sentenced on September 3, while the other convicted couriers will be sentenced on October 22.
