Student Pilot Lands Solo After Instructor Jumps Mid-Flight

Student Pilot Lands Solo After Instructor Jumps Mid-Flight — 1 of 2
1 / 2

A 22-year-old student pilot was left alone in the cockpit of a Cessna C-150 after her instructor opened the door and jumped out during a training flight near Toledo in Córdoba Province, Argentina. She thought he had a parachute at first but soon realised he had none. Despite limited flying experience, she radioed for help and safely landed at Coronel Olmedo Airport. The instructor’s body was later found in a nearby field. The flight school’s director praised her composure, noting she followed his last words—“keep moving forward”—and executed a perfect landing even while visibly shaken. Reports say the instructor had undergone psychiatric treatment known only to close family members, though he passed all required physical and mental health checks. Authorities are investigating flight records, communications and the aircraft for any mechanical issues.

How do you think that student managed to stay calm and land safely when the instructor just jumped out?

Do you know if the student had received specific emergency landing training before this flight?

It's odd the instructor didn't mention a training drill before jumping or confirm the student's preparedness for solo flight.

Sure, it sounds heroic, but maybe the student wasn't ready and this stunt could have ended in disaster.

Any flight school should enforce strict safety protocols and ensure instructors never exit mid-air without clear communication and plan.
