Obi Denies Anambra Debt Claims, Says ₦2.13bn Ecological Fund Was Left Intact

I have seen claims by the Anambra State Government that my administration left behind debts, including a ₦2 billion ecological loan, contractor liabilities, and unpaid salaries, gratuities and pensions. I maintain that these claims are false. My administration cleared historical gratuities and arrears of more than ₦35 billion. At handover, I maintain that the state had no outstanding salary, pension, gratuity or certified contractor debts. The ecological funds were released about three months before the end of my tenure for the Oko and Umuchiana erosion project. I said the funds were left intact in a First Bank account for the incoming administration because they were meant for that specific project. I also stated that project-tied funds were separate from the more than ₦75 billion in savings my administration said it left behind, and challenged anyone with contrary evidence to present it.
