Sheikh Gumi Curses Kidnappers of UNIJOS Student, Urges Broader Security Strategy
Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has invoked curses on those behind the abduction of a University of Jos student, calling the spree of kidnappings a failure of leadership and strategy. He warned that Nigeria’s current reliance on military force alone has not stemmed the tide of insecurity. Gumi urged authorities to embrace non-kinetic measures such as dialogue, mediation and ideological reorientation, saying violence only hardens armed groups. The cleric criticised the slow pace of government response, warning that gaps in action have emboldened criminal networks. He cautioned against conspiracy theories and emotional reactions, insisting on practical solutions to protect all Nigerians. The National Association of Nigerian Students has given the Federal and Plateau state governments a 48-hour ultimatum to secure the student’s release or face nationwide protests.
