Falana Demands Accountability Over Fuel Subsidy Savings as Hardship Deepens

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has questioned why Nigerians have not seen clear benefits from the removal of petrol subsidy, despite increased public revenue. Speaking on a television programme, Falana urged citizens to demand accountability from local, state and federal governments. He argued that higher allocations should translate into better roads, infrastructure and essential services. He cited a damaged road near Afe Babalola University in Ekiti State, noting that the local government reportedly received more than ₦5.4 billion between January and May while repairs were estimated to cost less than ₦500 million. Falana also warned against repeating past subsidy-related abuses, saying a large share of government revenue is still spent on debt servicing instead of directly improving living conditions.
