Atiku, Obi Camps Reject Calls for Single Opposition Candidate in 2027
The camps of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi have rejected calls for opposition parties to adopt a single presidential candidate against President Bola Tinubu in 2027. The G-100, convened by former Progressive Governors Forum Director-General Salihu Lukman, has urged opposition parties to unite behind one candidate to avoid splitting votes. However, Atiku’s camp says Nigerians should decide based on the policy options presented by candidates. Obi’s camp supports broader opposition cooperation but argues that a single candidate is not the only path to defeating an incumbent. The party maintains that Obi would be its preferred candidate if a coalition agrees on a joint presidential ticket. The disagreement highlights the challenge facing opposition parties ahead of the proposed August 31 summit: agreeing not only on a common platform, but also on who would lead any alliance.
