NIMC Faces Fresh Scrutiny Over Alleged Sale of NIN and BVN Data

The National Identity Management Commission is facing renewed scrutiny after a viral video allegedly showed an operator offering Nigerians’ NIN and BVN details for as little as ₦250. An investigative outlet had previously reported on the alleged operator and claimed that some licensed identity-verification partners enabled unauthorised access through sub-leasing arrangements. The report also alleged that paid training on accessing NIN and BVN services was being offered. NIMC has ordered an internal investigation into possible breaches by its tokenisation verification agents. The commission says its database remains secure, but it has not released the investigation’s outcome or publicly addressed claims that it was alerted before the issue went viral. With more than 100 million NIN records in the national database, the allegations have raised serious concerns about privacy, identity theft and accountability in Nigeria’s verification system.
