Grammy-Winning Jazz Singer Cassandra Wilson Dies at 70

Grammy-winning jazz singer, songwriter and producer Cassandra Wilson has died at the age of 70. Her longtime manager confirmed that she died peacefully at her home in Jackson, Mississippi, on September 2, surrounded by family and close friends. The cause of death was not disclosed. Wilson was celebrated for her deep contralto voice and her distinctive blend of jazz, blues and funk. She won two Grammy Awards, including Best Jazz Vocal Performance for “New Moon Daughter” in 1997 and Best Jazz Vocal Album for “Loverly” in 2009. During her career, Wilson collaborated with artists including Wynton Marsalis, The Roots, Luther Vandross, Angélique Kidjo and Terrence Blanchard. Her family has requested privacy as they mourn.
