FG, APC Reject Atiku’s Plan for Targeted Petrol Subsidy in 2027

The Federal Government and the APC have rejected Atiku Abubakar’s proposal to introduce a petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027. They argue that restoring subsidy would revive the fiscal strain and economic distortions that led to its removal in May 2023. Atiku says Nigerians have not seen enough benefit from the subsidy savings. He has called for greater accountability, arguing that the funds should help reduce poverty, improve education and security, and create opportunities for young people. His proposal is for a targeted and capped production subsidy, not the former import-based system. Under the plan, qualifying local refineries would receive crude oil at preferential prices under strict conditions to help lower petrol prices. The Federal Government says subsidy removal released about ₦15.8 trillion into the federation’s fiscal system between June 2023 and December 2025. The APC maintains that a return to subsidy would be financially unsustainable.
