Grammy-Winning Producer David Z Dies at 78

Grammy-winning producer and engineer David Rivkin, widely known as David Z, has died at the age of 78. He reportedly died on August 2 at a hospital in Burbank, California, after complications from an infection. David Z helped shape the Minneapolis Sound and played an important role in Prince's early career, producing his demo recordings and engineering some of his early albums. His work also included collaborations with Etta James, Buddy Guy, Al Green, Jody Watley and Jonny Lang. He contributed to Lipps Inc.'s “Funkytown” and co-produced Fine Young Cannibals' “She Drives Me Crazy,” both Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers. He won a Grammy in 2005 for his production work on Etta James' album, “Blues to the Bone.” His brother, Bobby Z, remembered him as a fearless producer and rebel whose influence on music will endure.
