YouTuber Johnny Somali Jailed for Six Months in Seoul Over Comfort Women Statue Stunt
An American livestreamer has been sentenced to six months in a Seoul prison for public nuisance and related charges. He was detained immediately after his April 15 verdict at the Seoul Western District Court. The court found he performed sexual gestures on a statue honoring Korean women forced into wartime slavery. He also pleaded guilty to distributing sexual deepfakes and causing a disturbance at a convenience store during his 2024 visit. In addition to the jail term, he will serve 20 days in detention and is banned from working with children and people with disabilities for five years. Prosecutors had sought three years, but the judge reduced the sentence citing limited harm to victims. Earlier controversies included wearing a MAGA hat in court, displaying a Rising Sun flag, and taunting subway passengers about Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. Local media report he has faced multiple assaults in response to his actions.
