What Has the US Really Gained from the 2026 Iran Conflict?
Since the war began in February 2026, the United States has seen few clear wins. There has been no regime change in Tehran. Nearly all US bases in the Middle East are damaged or inoperable. Iran now controls and charges fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, global oil prices have surged. The Pentagon reports that early operations cost tens of billions of dollars in munitions, equipment and logistics. To date, 13 US service members have died and hundreds more are wounded. While defence contractors, oil producers and banks have profited, overall financial and human costs keep climbing. In a recent Senate hearing, Pete Hegseth revealed that the US has spent $37.5 billion so far and may need an additional $60 billion to continue the campaign.
