Why Abuja’s FCT Will Remain Under Federal Police, Senate Explains

The Senate says the Federal Capital Territory cannot operate state police under the proposed policing framework because Abuja does not have a governor or a State House of Assembly. Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu said the FCT is directly administered by the Federal Government through the FCT minister, while the National Assembly makes laws for the territory. He said this means the federal police would remain responsible for policing Abuja. The clarification comes as the Federal Government prepares a national policing bill that could allow states to establish, fund and oversee their own police formations. The proposed changes would give state legislatures powers over state police, while the Federal Government could provide support subject to approval. Because of its distinct constitutional status, the FCT would remain under the federal policing structure even if state police is introduced across the 36 states.
