Parents Demand Justice After Miners Die in NSCDC Custody in Niger

Parents of artisanal miners who died after being arrested in Minna, Niger State, have demanded a thorough investigation, accountability and compensation for the bereaved families. Musa Aliyu said he lost two sons, aged 17 and 12, who had gone to a mining site at Mohammed Inuwa Wushishi Housing Estate. He said the boys helped him pay for medication during a long illness. Another parent, Lawal Mohammad, said his 15-year-old son was among those who died. He alleged that relatives were denied access to the detainees before they were later told to identify their bodies at the hospital. The families want authorities to establish how the deaths occurred and punish anyone found responsible.
