Atiku Says ₦70,000 Transport Allowance Buys Only About 50 Litres of Petrol
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Federal Government’s ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for public servants, calling it inadequate amid rising living costs. Atiku said that at about ₦1,400 per litre, the allowance would buy roughly 50 litres of petrol for an entire month. He argued that the six-month intervention offers limited relief and excludes private-sector workers, traders, transport operators and other informal workers. He urged the government to pursue lasting measures to curb inflation and improve purchasing power. He also called for clarity on how the allowance will be paid and on negotiations for a new minimum wage. The Federal Government approved the six-month transport intervention after talks with the Nigeria Labour Congress, alongside plans to clear outstanding allowances and set up a committee on a new minimum wage.
