NBC Seeks Fresh Appeal Over Court Ruling Blocking Broadcast Fines

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has asked the Court of Appeal in Abuja for permission to file a fresh appeal against a ruling that stopped it from imposing fines on broadcast stations. The commission’s earlier appeal was struck out on June 17, 2026, after its lawyers used “Nigerian Broadcasting Commission” instead of its statutory name, “National Broadcasting Commission,” in the filing. NBC says the error was made by its former legal representatives. The dispute began after NBC imposed ₦5 million fines on four broadcasters over documentaries on banditry and insecurity in Zamfara State. In January 2024, the Federal High Court held that NBC could not impose financial penalties because it is not a court of law. NBC now wants more time to appeal, arguing that the case affects its ability to enforce broadcasting standards. It also wants the court to consider whether Media Rights Agenda had the legal standing to bring the original suit.
