Tunji-Ojo Replies Atiku: Nigeria’s Land Borders Are Not Closed
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has challenged Atiku Abubakar’s promise to reopen Nigeria’s land borders if elected president in 2027. He said the borders are already open and cannot be reopened as claimed. He said Seme, Illela, Maigatari and Mfum were reopened in December 2020, while Idiroko, Ikom, Kamba and Tsamiya later resumed operations. He added that some crossings with Cameroon were shut because of Boko Haram-related security threats, not the 2019 border trade policy. According to the minister, restrictions that remain in some northern border areas are due to banditry and insurgency. He argued that border management must balance security, documentation, customs compliance and trade facilitation.
