Showunmi Challenges Opposition to Build a Clear 2027 Alternative
Segun Showunmi has questioned whether Nigeria’s opposition parties have built the structure needed to convert popular support into electoral success in 2027. Using Peter Obi as an example, he argued that presidential ambition requires more than public enthusiasm. It also needs ward structures, state leadership, credible candidates, polling agents and a strong party platform across the country. Showunmi compared a political party to a train: the presidential candidate may be the engine, but the state and local structures are the coaches that must move with it. Without that machinery, alliances can weaken quickly after an election setback. He also challenged opposition figures to present clear policy alternatives on subsidy reform, foreign exchange, infrastructure, policing and federalism. His central question is whether the opposition can unite around a governing programme, rather than simply opposition to President Tinubu.
