FBI Presence in Nigeria Is Political, Not About Cybercrime, Writer Argues

I believe the FBI’s presence in Nigeria is driven by politics rather than cybercrime enforcement. In my view, the issue raises questions about Nigeria’s sovereignty and its relationship with the United States. I argue that gift-card fraud and similar scams are petty theft, not the kind of cybercrime that threatens critical infrastructure, banks, or major technology firms. I compare them with sophisticated attacks involving power grids, bank systems, and ransomware. I maintain that the FBI’s interest in Nigeria cannot be explained solely by low-level online scams and is therefore politically motivated.
