Onanuga Challenges Atiku to Detail Proposed Targeted Petrol Subsidy
Presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga has asked former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to clearly explain how his proposed targeted petrol subsidy would work if he is elected president in 2027. Onanuga said Atiku should state the policy’s cost, funding source, intended beneficiaries and the method for identifying eligible Nigerians. He also asked what economic conditions would determine when the subsidy should end. The presidential aide argued that petrol pricing depends on crude prices, exchange rates, refining, transport and distribution costs. He questioned whether Atiku’s proposal would extend to diesel and kerosene, which are also widely used by households and businesses.
