LASTMA Impounds 38,000 Vehicles for Traffic Offences in Q2 2026

LASTMA Impounds 38,000 Vehicles for Traffic Offences in Q2 2026

In the second quarter of 2026, LASTMA impounded 38,000 vehicles for various traffic offences across Lagos State. Over 3,000 of these vehicles were apprehended through physical enforcement of violations such as indiscriminate parking, illegal use of BRT lanes, driving against traffic and failure to wear seat belts. The agency is shifting from on-the-ground checks to technology-driven enforcement. Drivers found in violation receive court papers and face the Lagos State Mobile Court or can settle penalties through a waiver process. A joint cleanup of the Lagos–Badagry Expressway is under way. LASTMA teams are working with waste management, environmental and task force agencies to remove trash, abandoned vehicles and other encumbrances.

Which of these traffic offences do you think contributed most to the 38,000 impounded vehicles in Q2 2026?

I agree, illegal parking likely accounts for the bulk of those impounded vehicles.

With over 3,000 busts for BRT lane misuse alone, enforcement seems more focused on penalties than genuine traffic safety.

I'm not convinced impounding tens of thousands of cars will actually ease traffic congestion across Lagos State.

Abeg, make we dey park only for designated spots and observe BRT lane signs to avoid impounding.
