Ezemalukwuo: A Name Earned Through Courage and Justice
In my father’s house were many wives and many sons. Ada, the first daughter, was married into a powerful family of warrant chiefs. When her brother from the same mother died, she was left without a defender. Her husband mistreated her, believing no one would speak for her. She returned home in tears and met my father, newly back from Lafia. Though young and facing a powerful family, he took up his sister’s case. At the Warrant Palace, judgement first leaned towards power. My father took Ada by the hand and said, “Nwannem nwanyị, bia ka anyi laa. I can cater for you.” His courage forced the chiefs to reconsider, and justice was finally done. As he left, the Warrant Chief gave him the name Ezemalukwuo Ikwe: a man who accepts fair judgement but walks away when justice is denied. It was a name earned by character, long before any title.
