Yoruba and Igbo Political Disagreement Is Not Automatically Bigotry
The heated online rivalry between supporters of Peter Obi and President Bola Tinubu is often framed as an Igbo-versus-Yoruba conflict. But political loyalties do not neatly follow ethnic lines. Several South-East political leaders and groups work with or support the APC, while Yoruba citizens also supported Obi in 2023. Social-media arguments and online popularity should not be mistaken for a complete picture of how Nigerians vote. Political disagreement becomes ethnic bigotry when criticism of a candidate turns into hostility, intimidation or contempt toward an entire ethnic group. Supporting Obi is not hatred of Yoruba people, and supporting Tinubu is not hostility toward Igbo people. I can disagree with Peter Obi's politics while admiring other Igbo leaders, just as I can support Tinubu without backing every Yoruba politician. Nigerians should challenge candidates, policies and arguments without turning political competition into ethnic warfare.
