Sanusi: Political Connections Can Undermine Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Fight

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, says political connections can allow people accused of wrongdoing to avoid accountability in Nigeria. Speaking in a television interview, Sanusi said Nigeria already has laws, anti-corruption institutions and courts. However, he argued that political influence can affect whether corruption cases are pursued or dismissed. He cited concerns about the treatment of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who he said had spent months in detention without a conviction. Sanusi warned that such cases may lead Nigerians to see anti-corruption efforts as political battles rather than an impartial application of the law. He called on political leaders, public office holders and the judiciary to ensure that existing laws are enforced fairly and for their intended purpose.
