Ebonyi Heritage Claim Challenges British Museum’s Benin Provenance Label
I am challenging the British Museum’s classification of items linked to Oweze of Omuagu as Benin objects from 1897. I believe the records point instead to Omuagu, Idembia in present-day Ebonyi State and to the 1902 Aro Field Force operations. I cite military and archive references that mention Omuagu and nearby communities during the 1902 campaign. I also point to a 1907 Onitsha store inventory and the museum’s 1908 accession date as evidence that the objects may have come from a different expedition from the Benin invasion. The items include a silver watch said to bear the inscription “To Oweze Omuagu 1902” and quartz rings associated with the Nnu Eye salt tradition. I am requesting further examination of the relevant British and Nigerian archival files, correction of the provenance record where necessary, and consideration of restitution to the Ezza heritage community.
