Dele Farotimi: VeryDarkMan Has Become the Common Man’s Hope for Justice

Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi says the growing influence of social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, reflects Nigerians’ loss of confidence in the police and judicial system. Reacting to the controversy over VeryDarkMan’s invitation to the Nigerian Bar Association’s annual conference in Port Harcourt, Farotimi argued that a functional justice system would not leave citizens seeking help from online activists. He described VeryDarkMan as a mirror of institutional failure, saying it is now easier for many ordinary Nigerians to seek justice through people like him than through the courts. Farotimi warned that more figures of this kind would emerge unless the judiciary and other public institutions address citizens’ grievances.
