The Ijaw Identity Debate: Territory, Representation and Political Power
The debate over Ijaw identity and political influence requires an honest and balanced examination. Questions about territory, state creation and representation are often closely tied to ethnicity in the Niger Delta. Ijaw communities are spread across several states, which makes political consolidation and territorial claims more complex than for groups concentrated in one state. Disputes may also arise when neighbouring communities identify with, or are identified as part of, a broader Ijaw cultural and political identity. This is not an issue affecting the Ijaw alone.
