My Experience With Nigeria’s Social Intervention Schemes: Delays, Fees and Alleged Diversion

I am writing as someone who was meant to benefit from government social intervention programmes. From my experience, these schemes are often announced without clear planning or effective systems to ensure that the poorest people receive the support. I believe weak accountability creates room for abuse. Funds may be approved, yet beneficiaries reportedly wait for months. At the community level, some registration officials allegedly demand up to ₦2,000 for a process that should be free. Those who cannot pay may be ignored. Some vulnerable households also reported that payments were reversed or never received. In my view, these programmes need transparent beneficiary lists, free registration, prompt payments and proper monitoring. Without this, interventions meant to help poor Nigerians may continue to benefit only a few people in power.
