Ondo Cocoa Worker Dies After Alleged JTF, Ministry Operation in Odigbo Forest Reserve
A 55-year-old cocoa worker, Nwafor Romano, has died after allegedly sustaining injuries during an operation involving personnel said to be members of the Joint Task Force and officials of the Ondo State Ministry of Natural Resources. The incident reportedly occurred on September 2 at Temidire Rotimi Camp in the OA3 Forest Reserve, Odigbo Local Government Area. Sources said armed personnel entered a model cocoa farm, leading to a confrontation in which several workers were injured. Romano reportedly died in hospital the following day. An affidavit of death records that Romano died on September 3 at age 55. A medical certificate reportedly listed loss of consciousness, stiffness and sudden death syndrome. Other workers were also said to have been injured. Cocoa farmers and workers in the reserve are calling for an impartial investigation into the operation, the reported confrontation and the circumstances surrounding Romano's death.
