US Lifts 12-Year Security Restrictions on Vessels Calling at Nigerian Ports
The United States Coast Guard has lifted the Condition of Entry restrictions imposed on vessels travelling to the US after calling at Nigerian ports. The restrictions, introduced in 2014, required affected vessels to undergo extra security checks, inspections and documentation before entering American waters. Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola said the decision followed improvements in Nigeria's maritime security system and compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code. He said the US Coast Guard carried out assessments of Nigerian port facilities and security procedures between 2024 and 2026. The removal could reduce delays and operating costs for shipping companies serving the Nigeria-US route. It may also improve vessel turnaround times, strengthen confidence in Nigerian ports and support trade and investment in the maritime sector.
