Justice for Matthew: UNIBEN Med Student’s Bail Hearing Set for June 3

The University of Benin Medical Student Association and the NIMSA South-South Region report that our colleague, Omatseye Matthew Utieyinoritseseola, has applied for bail at the Federal High Court 2 in Asaba. The hearing is scheduled for June 3, 2026. Matthew has been detained for over two months at the Delta State CID and three weeks at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre. His continued detention now threatens his Medical and Basic Clinical Sciences test on June 5. We respectfully urge the Honourable Judge to grant Matthew bail so he can sit his exam and continue his service to Nigeria. We appreciate the Dean of Medicine and all stakeholders for their support.

Do we know which student or alumni groups have led advocacy on similar cases before?

It's telling that the bail hearing is set weeks after his detention, raising questions about procedural delays and fairness in such cases.

Do we really think public outcry alone can shift court decisions, or should we focus on providing stronger legal evidence for Matthew?

Coordinate with NIMSA and medical union reps, gather affidavits and witness statements, and make sure say we cover all legal expenses.
