South African Attorney Who Mourned Girlfriend Online Gets Life Sentence for Her Murder
A South African attorney, Thubelihle Sbonakaliso Mpisi, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Mahlako Malebo Rabalao, and for setting her car on fire in an attempt to conceal the crime. Rabalao’s charred remains were found inside her Mercedes-Benz near her Midrand home in March 2023. The court found that she had died before the fire was started, despite medical experts being unable to establish the exact cause of death because of the severe burns. Prosecutors relied on cellphone records, forensic findings, expert testimony and Mpisi’s conduct before and after the incident. Evidence showed that Rabalao, an IT specialist, had planned to leave their shared home and end the relationship before her death. Mpisi was arrested in KwaZulu-Natal after a four-month investigation. Before his arrest, he had posted messages on social media mourning Rabalao and thanking people for their support.
