CSOs, Lawyers Reject Yari’s Claim That APC Will Remain in Power Beyond 2031

Civil society groups, lawyers and opposition politicians have rejected Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari’s claim that the APC will remain in power beyond 2031. They said no political party has a permanent right to govern Nigeria, as voters alone decide election outcomes. CISLAC Executive Director Auwal Rafsanjani described the statement as partisan optimism. He warned that presenting future victories as certain could weaken public confidence in elections and discourage citizens from participating. Rafsanjani cited the recent Osun governorship election as a reminder that voters cannot be taken for granted. He said political parties should focus on insecurity, unemployment, inflation, poverty, corruption and failing public services rather than claims of prolonged rule. He added that any renewed mandate must come through free, fair and credible elections, not incumbency advantage, intimidation, vote-buying or abuse of state resources.
