Police Investigate Death of 33 Suspected Illegal Miners in NSCDC Custody

The Niger State Police Command has opened an investigation into the deaths of 33 suspected illegal miners detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Minna. Police said the detainees were found dead in the early hours of September 17. The Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The command asked relatives, acquaintances and anyone with credible information to assist investigators. It also said the investigation would examine accountability and compliance with human-rights standards in custody.
