Nigeria Needs 554,353 More Officers for State Police, Abiodun Says
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun says Nigeria will need an additional 554,353 personnel to properly staff a proposed State Police system. Speaking at a colloquium in Ibadan held in honour of late Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Abiodun said the estimate was based on the United Nations recommendation of one police officer for every 414 citizens. He said about 184,784 officers would need to be recruited yearly for three years. The governor called for a constitutional State Police Take-Off Fund to prevent poorer states from being excluded. He also urged transparent recruitment, professional training, proper welfare and safeguards against political interference or preferential treatment in police work. Abiodun said state policing could improve local security and economic activity, while other speakers urged a professional and accountable system that protects citizens from abuse.
