Enugu Opposition Candidates Allege Violence, Campaign Restrictions Ahead of 2027 Polls
Governorship candidates from the PDP, NDC and ADC in Enugu State have alleged a pattern of political violence and administrative restrictions ahead of the 2027 general elections. At a joint press conference on October 12, they called for action to protect public safety and political rights. The candidates cited alleged disruptions of ward meetings in Nkanu West, gunfire at a political gathering in Nsukka, raids on campaign offices and violence around a welcome event near Akanu Ibiam International Airport. They also alleged that a witness to an attack was arrested instead of the suspects named in a petition. The coalition criticised Enugu’s campaign advertising rules, including permit fees it said were too costly for opposition parties. It asked the Inspector-General of Police to set up an independent investigation, publish an interim report within 14 days, and support a public peace accord involving all parties in the state.
