Senate Committees Plan Joint Response to Insecurity on Nigeria’s Waterways
Senator Gbenga Daniel led a joint meeting of three Senate committees on Wednesday to discuss rising insecurity and criminal activity on Nigeria’s waterways. The session also included the committee chairmen for Marine and Blue Economy, and National Security and Intelligence. The lawmakers discussed sea robbery, illegal bunkering, oil theft and kidnapping. Daniel said maritime insecurity threatens national security, economic growth and investment, and called for action on poverty, unemployment and poor infrastructure in riverine communities alongside security operations. The committees identified better coordination among agencies, modern surveillance, youth empowerment and stronger legislation as priorities. They are expected to prepare recommendations for consideration by the National Assembly.
