CUPP Chairman Warns High Campaign Costs Are Pushing Low-Income Nigerians Out of Politics
The chairman of the Coalition of United Political Parties has warned that the rising cost of campaigns and party politics is making it harder for capable Nigerians from low-income backgrounds to seek elective office. He said alleged electoral manipulation since the return to civilian rule in 1999 had weakened public trust in elections and democratic institutions. According to him, leaders may feel less accountable when election results do not reflect the choices of voters. He called for transparent electoral procedures, fair competition among candidates and stronger citizen involvement beyond election day. He said Nigerians must monitor elections and protect their votes to ensure that political power reflects the will of the people rather than money or manipulation.
