Rare Two-Headed Baby Turtle Found at Massachusetts Nesting Site
Wildlife workers have found a rare two-headed diamondback terrapin hatchling at a protected nesting site in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. The tiny turtle weighs about 0.18 ounces and is receiving specialist care at the Cape Wildlife Center. The condition, called bicephaly, occurs when an embryo does not completely separate during the development of identical twins. The two heads share one body, which can make feeding, movement and survival more difficult. Veterinarians are closely monitoring the hatchling's appetite, growth and behaviour. Researchers say the case could offer useful insight into developmental abnormalities and the health of turtle populations.
