Soludo Declares Environmental Emergency in Anambra, Orders Daily Drain Desilting

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has declared a state of emergency on the environment as the state marks its 35th anniversary. Speaking in Awka, Soludo launched a renewed Clean and Green initiative to make Anambra cleaner, better planned and more sustainable. He said environmental degradation, especially gully erosion, is now the state’s biggest existential threat. The governor said more than 30 percent of Anambra’s landmass has been affected by erosion, which he described as largely caused by human activities over several decades. He directed all 179 communities to desilt drainages daily and asked households to provide waste bins, manage runoff within their compounds and stop building on waterways. He also urged residents, schools, churches, markets and traditional institutions to plant trees, report environmental offences and take responsibility for keeping their communities clean.
