Enugu Forest Guards Cite Kidnapping Threats for Ugwuaji Forest Base
The Enugu State Command of the National Forest Guard says reported kidnapping attempts, armed attacks and abductions prompted it to establish a Forward Operating Base in the Ugwuaji–Obeagu forest corridor. The command said the route links communities in Enugu East, Enugu South and Nkanu West LGAs, making it vulnerable to criminal movement. It cited a reported attempted kidnapping in May and an August attack in which four people were rescued while another person was allegedly abducted and later released. The Forest Guard denied allegations of harassment, land grabbing and intimidation, saying the base does not determine land ownership or settle boundary disputes. It said the Army and Police verified its personnel and security mandate, while calling for an independent investigation into all allegations against its officers and the reported attack on its operatives.
